Ucchusma Practice

  • Compiled by Kether Su and the TBSN Translation Committee
  • Translated from the "Ultimate Secrets of True Buddha Tantra
  • Procedure for Reference Only, subject to be changed.

Important Note: This practice procedure is for the reference of those who have taken the Ucchusma Practice Empowerment, and as an item of general interest. As with all Tantric practices, it should be performed only by those who have received the Refuge Empowerment and also this specific instruction and empowerment. This is a generalized practice procedure, and if there are any differences between this and the one transmitted at the time of empowerment, of course those instructions should be followed.

Before proceeding to the actual cultivation, the Dharma-cultivator ought to prepare a Vajra Sceptre carved from garu-wood. A human face should be sculptured on both ends of the sceptre. Place the Vajra Sceptre in a portable Buddhist pagoda. Daily offerings and Dharma practices must be performed before it.

  1. Enter the Altar and chant the Purification Mantras.

  2. Chant the Invocation Mantra to summon Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and the Dharma Guardians. Recite the special verse to invoke the Ucchusma Vajrapala:

Ability to devour all impurities testifies to His divine prowess,
    Demons are subdued by the great loftiness of the true martial guardian;
Unrivaled is the meritorious power of Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha,
I hereby summon the Ucchusma Vajrapala thrice and with focused piety.

  3. True Buddha Great Prostration.

  4. True Buddha Great Mandala Offering.

  5. True Buddha Fourfold Refuge Method.

  6. Cast the Armor-protection.

  7. Chant the High King Sutra.

  8. Form the mudra of the Deity. Either the Ucchusma Vajrapala Origin Mudra or the Shakyamuni Meritorious Origin Mudra.

Firstly, visualize Shakyamuni Buddha emerges from amidst the Emptiness. A great blue-colored brilliance then emits from His heart, and ascends to the space atop of the center of His crown. Next, the ‘Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha’ with three faces, eight arms and nine eyes, manifests in the bright blue brilliance. The Deity has red hair, a blue-colored body, black arms and green faces with wrathful expressions. (Please refer to the picture of the Deity printed and distributed by the True Buddha School)

  9. Visualisation:
The Tantric-cultivator should visualize great blue brilliance being radiated from his own heart. At the same time, visualize blue light shines and descends from the solar plexus of the ‘Ucchusma Vajrapala Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha’. Blue brilliance from the Deity and the practitioner meet and merge into each other in the Emptiness. A loud sound ‘Hong!’ explodes in the mid-air, and the Dharma-cultivator immediately transforms into the three-heads and eight-arms image of the ‘Ucchusma Vajrapala Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha’. The practitioner and the Vajrapala become one and without difference.

  10. Chant the Buddha Name and Ucchusma Mantra. (Release the mudra and use the prayer beads)

First recite: "Namo Origin Master Shakyamuni Buddha, Namo Transformation Body Shakyamuni Buddha, Namo Ucchusma Vajrapala Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha." (Repeat for 10 times)

  11. Then, recite the divine mantra:

"Om, pu er gong, mo ha bu la nu ya, pu er ji, pu er kay, wei mo na xi, wu jiu mo lah ter, hum hum, pong pong, svaha!" (Repeat for 108 times or more)

  12. Nine Cycle Buddha Breathing Method and the Internal Fire Yoga.

  13. Enter into meditation. Enter into the Ucchusma Vajrapala Great Sovereign Divine King Samadhi.

  14. End meditation and chant the following verse:

A great Vajrapala omnipresent throughout the Universe,
    Resolves and transforms disasters into auspicious occurrences;
After filth is removed, brilliance shall emit in spontaneity,
Evil spirits and demons are subdued by the Ucchusma Deity.

  15. Dedication of merits:

I pray that through practising the Ucchusma Yoga,
I can act according to His Origin Vows,
Until the stage of spiritual accomplishment,
Whereby I shall watch over all sentient beings.

  16. True Buddha Great Prostration and leave the Altar.

His Holiness Living Buddha Lian-sheng said, "In order to attain spiritual response in the Ucchusma Yoga, one should practise Dharma and make offerings to the Deity daily. The mantra of the Vajrapala must be repeated for at least 300,000 times. After these conditions have been fulfilled, the Dharma cultivator should take out the Vajra Sceptre from the pagoda on a full-moon night (or the fifteenth day of each lunar month). The sceptre is then placed in the center of a clean copper basin, which is filled with pure water. Present your best offerings and burn the best incense. Chant mantra overnight.

"At this moment, you will see the Vajra Sceptre and the pure water emit brilliance, or the Vajra Sceptre transforms into other objects or into images of some deities. Continue to recite the mantra. You shall soon see the Vajra Sceptre rises out of the water, reaching a height of three feet, five feet, seven feet or even three meters above the water surface.

"It is during this time that the Ucchusma cultivator should pay homage and repent all sins that he has committed in the past. He must also make the great Bodhi vows, and pray for the fulfillment of all his wishes, and for accomplishment in all Dharma practices. He should vow to salvage all sentient beings as well."
